Homemade Easter Egg Dye

Peachie Thompson · April 8, 2021

We celebrated Easter Sunday by going to church in person rather than watching mass on YouTube. It was our first time in person since the pandemic started a year ago.

The sermon was meaningful and the celebration was simply beautiful. It was refreshing to see familiar faces and meet new friends. The kids enjoyed the church Easter egg hunt with friends.

At home, we did our annual tradition of dyeing our own Easter eggs followed by an afternoon tea party. The finale was the girls' own egg-hunt orchestrated by Mommy and Daddy. It was a gorgeous day to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus!

Here is my recipe for easy Easter egg dye:

Boil 12-15 eggs (preferably white but if you're like me and always forget to get white ones, brown eggs will do just fine). Let the eggs cool down to room temperature.

For the homemade dye, you need the following:

  1. (4-6) Cups or small bowls
  2. Drying rack or egg carton
  3. (4-6 teaspoons) Vinegar
  4. (2-3 cups) Boiling water
  5. A set of food coloring
    • Neon produces the best color in my experience
    • Red, yellow, blue and green works well since you can mix them up to produce other colors

Instructions:

  • Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water into a cup or small bowl
  • Add one teaspoon of vinegar
  • Then add 15-20 drops of food coloring
  • Repeat this process to create additional colors
  • Once you have all the colors you want ready to go, use a spoon to gently soak the eggs in the dye for 3-5 minutes
  • Place the dyed eggs on a drying rack or back in an egg carton, allow to dry before handling
  • If you want to level up: use stickers and edible markers to decorate your eggs

I hope you enjoy using this recipe and make it a part of your annual Easter tradition. If you made this, let me know how it turned out. Email me at peachie@peachinsurance.net.
