I have many friends and clients who have or took care of someone who have battled breast cancer. The term “breast cancer warrior” is an understatement. I often get asked if someone can get insurance after having breast cancer. The short answer is yes. Everything hinges on underwriting. Underwriters consider the person’s overall medical history plus the age, type/stage/grade of cancer, treatment, and timing of the application. Sometimes, there is a wait period for those with higher stages and/or grade.
Ultimately, the key is working with a knowledgeable insurance advisor who understands and knows how to navigate the underwriting matrix for you. It is important to have this insurance advisor match you with the carrier best suited for your situation. On some occasions, breast cancer history can preclude you from getting insurance – but you will not know until you speak with an insurance professional who truly knows how underwriting works and understands your unique circumstances.
For the month of October, my team and I hope to help the National Breast Cancer Foundation and all breast cancer warriors out there to spread the word about breast cancer.
Below you will find some helpful books and information from the National Breast Cancer Foundation. We did not create this so credit must go to the respective authors and the NBCF. We simply curated them for you, so you have one place to get them:
- 3 Steps to Early Detection
- Bra-Fit Guide
- Nutrition-Care for Breast Cancer Patients
